CGM users face challenges while finding the right spot to wear the sensor. But when you understand the nuances of sensor placement, a few simple tips can make a lot of difference.

Why is finding a good spot for CGM placement is difficult?

For starters, many children and lean adults find it challenging because they simply don’t have enough fat under the skin for the sensor to adhere securely. Even when you do find a spot, using the same area over and over can lead to scarring, which only makes it tougher for the sensor to stick properly next time (Read more above this here). Areas that move a lot, like near your waist, are also problematic. The constant motion, combined with sweat and moisture, can weaken the adhesive, causing the sensor to shift or even fall off. And if you have tattoos or scars, you might find that the sensor glue triggers an allergic reaction, resulting in annoying itching and discomfort.

So where can you actually place the sensor in the body?

When it comes to where you can place your sensor, it’s important to follow the guidelines that come with your device. Many users wear it in the upper arm. Not only is it comfortable, but it also offers a discreet spot for the sensor. Some people have also had success placing the sensor on the side of the thigh, though you should always double-check your device’s instructions first. If you decide to try an unapproved spot, be sure to monitor it frequently to ensure it remains securely in place.

Now how to apply the Sensor?

First, look for an area with at least 6 mm of fat to give your sensor a stable home, and stay away from spots that experience a lot of movement or friction from clothing.

Start by cleaning your skin with a gentle, pH-neutral soap, and if necessary, shave or trim any hair.

Allow any alcohol used for cleaning to dry completely before you apply the sensor. And remember to rotate your sensor placement regularly. If you used your left arm last time, try your right arm next to prevent scarring and maintain accurate readings.

With a little attention to these details and a bit of trial and error, finding the right spot for your CGM sensor can become a fun and manageable part of your diabetes care routine. Enjoy the journey to a more comfortable and reliable experience!
